5 Tips for Traveling When You Have Diabetes
Do you feel tied down because you have diabetes? With some planning and preparation, it’s okay to travel. Here are our five best tips for traveling with diabetes.

Whether you need to travel for work or you’d like to enjoy a vacation, traveling may feel out of reach when you need to take medications on time, check your blood sugar, keep up with all of your diabetic supplies, and manage your diet. But, the fact is many people who have diabetes travel regularly.

At Palm Desert Urgent Care, Dr. Manzoor Kazi treats diabetic patients often. Both Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes are serious conditions that require monitoring your blood sugar, managing your diet, and taking medication. It can make travel seem out of reach, but we can help you understand what to do to ensure you have everything you need to care for yourself on a trip.

1. Come to our office first

Schedule an appointment at Palm Desert Urgent Care before you leave. We can give you paperwork that includes instructions on using your medications and what equipment you need. Also, having a letter from your doctor’s office can be helpful at airport security.

We can give you a written prescription in case your bag containing your medication is lost or stolen so that you can easily replace it. We advise packing your supplies and medication in a carry-on bag, but those go missing sometimes, too!

If you’re traveling to a different time zone, we can help you figure out how to alter your injection routine so that you stay on schedule.

2. Make sure you know where to get medical help

Let the staff on the plane, cruise ship, or train know that you’re a diabetic, and let them know what equipment you need. If you plan your trip through a travel agency, inform them as well.

Ask where the nearest pharmacy and medical facility is when you reach your destination in case of emergencies.

3. Take your supplies

Make a list of everything you need and use it as you pack for your trip. You may want to pack extra items in case of a delay.

Put your blood glucose meter, insulin, syringes, and cold packs in the bag you plan to carry if you’re flying. Tell the airline and security personnel you have an insulin pump if you use one. Ask for a hand inspection so your equipment doesn’t go through an X-ray machine.

Make sure all of your supplies have the manufacturer’s label attached.

4. Plan your meals

Along with your supplies, pack glucose tablets and healthy snacks. If you plan where to eat, check the menus to ensure appropriate food is available. Take and refill your water bottle frequently.

5. Check  your feet

It’s easy to overlook your usual foot care routine while traveling. However, you could develop blisters or sores if you walk more or wear different shoes. Make sure to check your feet on a daily basis.

By being prepared, you can enjoy traveling and continue to take good care of yourself. Schedule an appointment at Desert Palm Urgent Care, and we can help you get ready.
